The production and trade in theriac was therefore regulated by the Magistrato alla Sanità and by the Consiglio di Dieci.

There's a statue of a bearded man on the façade of the church of San Zulian, above the entrance.

Yet another saint, one presumes, before walking on towards the main sights at St Mark's.

Well, no! That's Tommaso Ravenna, astrologer, physician, patron of the arts and sciences, knighted in several countries, who in the 1500s got rich and famous selling remedies for syphilis.

Senatore con stola di duolo — Senator with a mourning stole — Grevembroch 1-33

This painting depicts a member of the Pregadi — the Venetian senate — dressed in the traditional toga of important magistrates, with a black stola as a sign of mourning. There were special rules about how magistrates could dress, even in periods of mourning.
