After a recent warning about Uber Eats, I really need to bring this to your attention. It would be great to get this boosted widely as it's a conversation that needs to be voiced. IMO Uber Eats is openly making their delivery drivers illegally insist of making scans of UK gov't issued ID claiming it's for delivery security (bullshit) to get the order to the right person.
Uber Eats has changed the way UK delivery 'partners' (gig working slaves) HAVE to ID check the general public. Gone is the option to look at someone and say 'Yup, you're obviously old enough to order alcohol' or have a quick look at an official source of ID to check their age. Now, the order will be taken back if the customer does not let the driver take a scan of their National ID card, Driving Licence or VALID Passport. So there's loads of issues here and I, as a delivery driver am having no part in this identity harvesting/theft.
The UK does not have a national ID card and I hope it never does for this very reason - Uber storing gov't records is never going to go well.
Not everyone has a driving licence. It's a very simple fact. A lot of people do not or cannot drive and therefore do not have a driving licence.
Passports do not have to be valid in the UK to be used as a source of ID but that aside, a delivery driver cannot insist you show them any sort of ID.
Quite often, a relative will order a bottle of something for a customer as a present. The person ordering is legally allowed to buy it, the person receiving the gift is legally allowed to drink it but the ID won't match even if they let the driver scan it which I sincerely hope that no one does.
Handing over your gov't issued ID to a delivery driver with no ID themselves other than their phone app, it certainly not something I would entertain and quite honestly, no one should. If asked by the police, I would hesitate unless they had a fkucing good reason but a delivery driver can do one, and I'm a delivery driver.
Now, do remember, if a driver turns up at your place with a bag of age restricted bits, they will have to return the order if you don't produce the ID, please don't blame the driver, if they leave you the order they won't get paid and their account may be cancelled meaning they can't work again for Uber Eats - EVER! But, there's also a high chance that you will have to fight for your refund Instead, please don't order age restricted deliveries. There'll be less and less drivers delivering them anyway.
This as far as I'm concerned is an illegal request by an uncaring American company who is bulldozing international laws so they can collect and quite probably sell your ID.
