Cofio Aberfan.
I, like many here, had family that raced to the village to help dig. Growing up, any time a car trip took us past the village, the whole car would be silent.
The event is considered one of the worst mining disasters in British history and was entirely preventable. Concerns about the tip were ignored by the National Coal Board.

I was 10 in 1966 and in a primary school in Cardiff just like the one destroyed in Aberfan.
Our headmaster, Mr Harris, walked into our classroom to tell our form teacher of the disaster.
As he looked around our classroom, he wept...It was the first time I'd seen a grown man cry in public.
I still remember that awful day as if it was yesterday.
