The Act of Union (1840)
Britain's response to the 1837 rebellions was the Act of Union. It merged Upper & Lower Canada into one province with a key goal of assimilating French Canadians. The plan backfired. It created political gridlock that forced French and English politicians to form coalitions to govern, setting the stage for the 'Great Coalition' that would later champion Confederation. #Canada #CreationOfCanada #History #Politics
