Whenever I see the three doors in a row on W.M. Whyte's 1885 tenements on Queen's Drive in Glasgow, I'm always reminded of the Monty Hall Problem. Based on the US game show Let's Make a Deal, this problem shows how poor the intuitive human understanding of probabilities actually is.

What is randomness? That's a rather philosophical question. Randomness is some mysterious gremlin of chaos. A demonic entity that defies certainly in the future. What is it, mathematically? If you read this article, I hope to leave you without a satisfying answer.

When designing games, the basic maths of probability systems can be useful, but also lead to a bit of head-scratching, especially for those of us for whom high school maths lessons have receded somewhat into the fog of ages past.
