dog day cicadas (Neotibicen canicularis) I've seen recently

#bugstodon #insects#cicadas #Hemiptera#Cicadidae

A cicada hanging from its old exoskeleton. Its colours are delicate and exquisite, and the veins of its wings are almost rainbow-coloured.

A cicada nymph climbing up a tree trunk to molt. It has no wings and is coated with dried dirt.

Looking down at a freshly molted cicada on a pine tree trunk. Its ocelli, the triangle of red jewel-like simple eyes on its head between its principal eyes, are very visible from this angle.

An adult cicada on a pine tree trunk near sunset. Rather dark, green-bronze, with large brown eyes.

Also, right as I was coming home I saw a pair of mating thread-legged bugs (family Reduviidae, subfamily Emesinae) on the wall! I have only seen them singly before. They're extremely skinny assassin bugs with a mantis-like raptorial first pair of legs.

They're very hard to take photos of as they will try to get away from you and also do this shaky, juddering walk. (Camouflage?) Lots of better photos here: https://bugguide.net/node/view/213

45° angled photo of a pair of small long thin insects with legs so thin they're barely visible, on a stone slab. The female (bottom) has her first pair of legs tucked up; they're thicker and shorter, made for grabbing, like a praying mantis's. In the foreground are a few bristle millipedes, one very small.
