@pezmico Bike Waikato has two articles for candidates for Waikato councils.

One summary article and one breaking down the details of how they did their assessment.

🚨
Aotearoa New Zealand Local election resources!
Remember to Vote!

Re-posting a collection of useful links for fedizens voting in the #LocalElections25 #NZPol #poti2025

Originally tooted yesterday as a reply but for better visibiility here it goes again:

https://localelections.nz/ - Gen Zero survey

https://theprogressreport.co.nz/local-candidates-2025/ - public information

https://www.votefortetiriti.com/ - honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi

https://policy.nz/2025 Local Gov NZ - public info

https://paultheotherone.com/lg25/ - guide to regional councils and red flag spotting

https://ratepayer.vote/ - Taxpayers Union candidate endorsement (kiss of death, from my point of view).. a check here is a bad candidate in my book.

AUCKLAND
https://www.bikeauckland.org.nz/campaigns/bikeable-auckland/ - for better cycling in the city

CANTERBURY - Vote for clean drinking water
https://www.greenpeace.org/aotearoa/freshwater/vote-clean-drinking-water/

These are just the ones I used to inform my vote (thanks again @Kay ) but remember to check for any groups advocating for the things you care about in your community and use them to guide you.

Lastly, if you still cant decide who to vote for, go for whoever is more likely to defeat the worst candidates you'd like to vote against.

Do Participate if you can!
Voting alone is not going to solve this but we definitely need to use any tools at our disposal and not participating can and will make things worse.

Please comment with any other resources you've found or your approach to choosing the least worst when there is no best.
#democracy or what's left of it.

Waikato medical school "business" case dodgy documents dumped at 6:45pm on a Friday night.

Unsurprisingly, the "cost benefit analysis" suggests it will be cheaper to build a brand new medical school and run it for 120 students, than to absorb those students using existing capacity in the Dunedin and Auckland med schools.

Sounds dodgy as to me.

Remember that Waikato's Neil Quigley threw over a million dollars to former National MP Stephen Joyce for "consultancy" services. Pre-election Quigley announced his proposed new school as "a present to National."

Joyce is famous for his inaccurate calculations and this feels like an in-house National party pay off.
