My election night R code worked last night! 🎉! It was inspired by @andrew & Gabe Osterhout's #PositConf2025 talk about the Idaho's election website built with R, Quarto & the {targets} #RStats 📦

My results page: https://www.district2framingham.com/posts/2025-11-04-2025-framingham-election-results/

Their repo: https://github.com/andrewheiss/election-desk

This is also the first time I used the {mapgl} #RStats 📦 by Kyle Walker for a major project.

The talk by @andrew and Gabe Osterhout on "Election Night Results with R and Quarto" that inspired my #RStats code is now on YouTube! Well worth a watch if you're interested in posting ANY frequently updated data online at scale:

@Lluis_Revilla
@andrew did a presentation at #Positconf2025 on updating a Quarto website with election data for the state of Idaho using the {targets} #RStats 📦. That may be a more robust workflow than you need, but it got me interested in targets for Quarto! You may want to look at his sample code? https://github.com/andrewheiss/election-desk

Does it make sense to travel to a professional conference after you've retired? I decided to find out! How it went at the #Positconf2025 data science event in Atlanta last week:

You can search and filter all Bluesky posts with the hashtags #Positconf2025, #Positconf25 and/or #Positconf in my Shiny app:
https://apps.machlis.com/shiny/positconf2025/

posit::conf(2025) is @Posit 's data science conference that took place in Atlanta & virtually last week, with a focus on #RStats & #Python

(I didn't do this for Mastodon posts because I've encountered objections here in the past when doing similar aggregation of Mastodon content)

You can use the Positron data explorer on csv and parquet files without first loading them into an #RStats or Python data frame! Just click on the file name in the explorer.
(Learned at #Positconf2025 )
Soon, filtering/sorting data in the data explorer will generate R code for that view.

Screenshot of Positron data explorer with 5K race results. At left is list of files with a parquet file highlighted. Next column has sparkline data visualizations for each column. To the right of that is a table/grid display of the data.

You want to see people sometimes get worse before they get better: That’s when people are learning, @grimalkina tells #PositConf2025
If people feel they don’t have the freedom to do that, and instead feel they always need to demonstrate top performance, it’s a problem.

Successful code is copied via conventional human social learning, @grimalkina tells #Positconf2025 . Coding solutions are improved by the group, via both ‘tweaks’ and ‘leaps’. Most leaps fail, she notes, but the wins are big advancement. All are part of the same process!

What makes developers feel more threatened by AI? If orgs think you need to be brilliant to succeed, and there’s a lot of public negative measurement of people’s perceived skills. - @grimalkina at #Positconf2025
Feel less threatened? Learning is valued.

Successful teams have: A learning culture (learning being celebrated), sense of agency, (belief that when you do something, a result will happen and not be blocked) self-efficacy (positive belief in yourself) & motivation, and sense of belonging, @grimalkina tells #Positconf2025
