The pattern of unprecedented disasters is becoming more precedented.

I like Nesrine’s writing but this piece is an example of how in the wake of a particular unprecedented disaster we get lots of on-the-hoof analysis and pleas for a collective awakening.

But rarely get much articulation of what life we should lead instead. And here Nesrine does not offer any

“It seems that at precisely the moment when this realisation should yoke us together in all the ways life is rapidly changing, we are all being untethered. But ultimately, whatever different spheres we inhabit, we are all still trapped on the same planet.”

That’s essentially her whole message. We are trapped.

…I’m guilty of this too. Wallowing in my own inertia.

But it is especially the job of a journalist with a national profile to articulate actionable steps.

The dilemma is that what needs to be said is the antithesis of most of what modernity is selling us. And maybe that’s why nothing can be said
