What Daniel Sturridge said is for the most part correct. However I can't escape the thought of seeing Endo benching. If he's not yet ready for minutes, why was he on the bench? If he is ready, why wasn't he deployed when it seemed we might be losing the game? When Mac Allister came on (although he has played the DM position uncomfortably in the past) he was deployed to replace Wirtz as a deeper midfielder to provide at least some containment, but that's not a DM.

@vruz love Maca but he isn't reeeeeallly a DM. Agreed.

I am glad we didn't lose but I am annoyed we didn't win.

@camille I agree. And my comment was not so much about Mac Allister, he is what he is and he does what he can do. My comment was more about trying to understand Iraola's lack of options, or refusal to evaluate DM options.

Liverpool were effectively playing with Wirtz as the attacking midfielder/No. 10, behind Gakpo and Isak, with Szoboszlai and Gravs deeper. Macca came on for Wirtz, but he did not simply take Wirtz's No. 10 position. Szoboszlai moved forward into the No. 10 role.

Macca dropped into the deeper midfield, essentially alongside/near Gravenberch, providing more stability in front of the defence. That helped. But why so late in the game? And why still no real DM? Those are probably some of the Monday questions being discussed amongst the training team.

@camille Endo missed the World Cup due to an injury, but he was on the bench yesterday. No explanation available why he wasn't played, and I'm not aware of any journalists asking useful questions. The closest to that was Daniel Sturridge who made some intelligent observations, but he's not a journalist.
