Is the only way to have work meetings that aren't constantly recorded or using an AI notetaker (which is recording) to start one's own organization with a no-recording policy?

@Em0nM4stodon Company policies are not guarantees of behavior. Apart from very small meetings with people you know well, the chances are good someone is recording. It might even be an accessibility accommodation for someone who has a hearing deficit.
@Em0nM4stodon We have a no bots policy. Doesn't help when we're in someone else's meetings, but for our own: interdit, verboten, nope.
@Em0nM4stodon Oh! But the weirdest bot problem was we found Chinese bots joining our Zoom training sessions, surreptitiously recording them, and then posting them online. We have since mitigated this by [redacted], but it was bizarre and unexpected.
@Em0nM4stodon just the other week my team had a meeting with an external vendor, who invited an AI notetaking bot. My bosses boss immediately asked them to remove it. It can be done, and normalized.
Just use Jitsi meet. It is free and open source, no AI recordings.
@backtoanalog I wish all organizations were using Jitsi meet (or equivalent) without recording. Alas, this is very far from what is happening.

"no-recording" policy is better written as "no electronic devices" policy.
Most, if not all 2026 devices have multiple microphones and real owners of those devices (I mean Apple/Google) have no interest in turning those mics on. If not yet, tomorrow for sure.

I feel like first people will lean heavily into pre-meetings, with meetings becoming more performative. This is almost certainly already happening. Then, eventually, someone will rediscover the idea of facilitating meetings as places to openly communicate, which will necessitate not recording them.
@Em0nM4stodon I really don't have any issue at all with the minute-taker recording a meeting so they get the minutes right. It's LLM transcription using third party software and similar video recording I mostly object to.
Curious how state recording laws impact AI recording/transcription?
1-party states imply that because YOU are participating and YOU are recording, it's perfectly legal to do so without obtaining consent.
2-party states require everyone in attendance to give consent.
And then there are hybrids & exceptions galore.
@ralfmaximus Indeed, but also privacy laws apply here as well. So the 1 or 2 consents recording laws apply for individuals, but organizations (as well as some individuals depending on circumstances) must also comply with privacy laws, that might mandate data collection disclosure and/or requiring consent prior to collection (depending on circumstances and jurisdictions).

@Em0nM4stodon It feels like it at this point. Even before LLM note taking came into the mix, so many people had started to record meetings for various reasons.
