- i specifically find that speaking the magic words "gambler's fallacy!" will often be sufficient to help me identify not merely assumptions made about an input distribution, but also subtle false inferences regarding a corresponding response in the output
@aeva i specifically recall finding this to frequently be a source of strength to me during the two-year period i spent developing the parsing mechanism that was not only the first time i have ever taken a risk and dived into the unknown, possibly just ever but certainly in the sense that defines good research

- it was extremely significant to me when another student gil was faster than me in cryptanalysis (codebreaking) exercises in a cryptography summer course from johns hopkins cty. because it was easily the first time i'd realized the concept of intelligence affected me emotionally. and because i believe within a period of maybe 30 second or perhaps 5 minutes, i had decided that he had done it faster, and that was fine.
- i was then able to figure out how--he took risks i was afraid to, inferring letters that were uncertain to me. i think if i had not previously accepted that he had done it faster (better), then i would have considered him "cheating". and then i would have wallowed in a greivance complex and never taken any risks again.
(openly NSA instructor. they either did not understand how to teach bright young mathematicians or purposefully intended it to limit their imaginations. i think the NSA really does not have much up their sleeve).
