Math or maths? 🧮
@catsalad Spotted in Oxford
Maybe instead of debating this special case we should fix something more important, perhaps by getting people to understand that verbs should match subjects?
For example:
"The detailed study of cloud formations and rainfall distribution have led to an interesting conclusion."
I hear this error constantly, even from highly educated people.
@catsalad the long form is Matthews.
@catsalad
Maths.
Although math is becoming the new norm in Nz
due to Americanisation. )':
@catsalad I actually voted for maths because I like to tease my family and say maths..
.but I actually say math.
@catsalad It's clearly a non-count noun like 'misery', 'confusion', and 'torture'.
@catsalad Would it be "Maffs" in lolcat?
@catsalad
Despite being en-US natively, I adopted the en-UK "Maths" before I even knew it was a Thing. "mathematics" shortened to "maths" just seemed to make more sense to me than "math".
@catsalad Maths is short for mathematics. 'Math' sounds like someone couldn't be bothered to even say the full abbreviation, or they are trying to say the abbreviation for 'Mathematic'..
