I'm glad to see Mastodon will be adopting the world's most popular decentralized social networking protocol: SMTP https://techcrunch.com/2026/06/17/mastodon-looks-to-newsletters-to-help-revive-the-open-social-web/
@cwebber The re-grouped superband Transatlantic's new album, but because Mike Portnoy is a dick, they put him last this time
@cwebber ok, but is it going to be two-way?
@cwebber feels like a corollary Zawinski’s Law
@cwebber fascinating. i will definitely try this out.
@cwebber A friend of mine does research on which protocols/services an authoritarian government could not easily attack or shut down without hurting businesses and their interests on the internet. It boils down to https and DNS.
So, what can we hide in Https and DNS services/traffic?
As a side note, SMTP is my favorite cautionary tale of how decentralized protocols can become centralized over time
@cwebber huh. this seems like a fine idea, tbh.
Hi everyone I was wondering if someone could explain SMTP to me? Thanks!!!!
@cwebber No.
No one here is that cruel. This is the NICE social network.
@cwebber I think when Alannis Morrisette wanted to learn what irony was she asked you. 😁
@cwebber It's a construction company. It transports messages by truckloads.
@cwebber I also don't know what SMTP is because it's always blocked by firewalls i don't control.
@cwebber attaching myself to these replies in hopes of indirectly getting an explanation of BDSMTP
SMTP Rules
1. You can't just be up there and just doin' an email send like that
1a. An SMTP is when you
1b. Okay well listen. An email is when you email the
1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The sender is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, receiver, that prohibits the receiver from doing, you know, just trying to accept the message. You can't do that.
...
2) Do not do an email please.
@cwebber Stupid Machines Trying to Pee (SMTP) is the newest wave of Large Language Models, trained exclusively on the toots of the most prolific Fediverse shitposters.
It is somewhat amusing, but the result is mostly spam.
@cwebber Oh jesus, of course people are coming to explain...I'm so sorry.
Folks look who you are talking to before you assume they don't know
@cwebber It’s a protocol for “electronic mail”. I imagine this is similar regular mail, but with more electronics.
@cwebber Wrong answers only? 😁
@cwebber SMTP is an innocent trusting child who has to be protected by bodyguards SPF, DKIM and DMARC from all the bad people out there.
@cwebber first you connect to your server and say HELO, it's very important to politely greet it. then you say who you are, and who you want to talk to, then you deposit your message, then you finish with a cr/lf then a period, then another cr/lf.

@cwebber It's like email.
@cwebber It stands for Samir Makes Tasty Paella. You come to my flat and I make paella. It’s very popular, I think it may be the most successful distributed paella-sharing scheme on the interwebs.
@cwebber (S)tar (M)uppets (T)alk (P)retty.
It's the thing email uses. So when you click "send" you place your treasured words into the hands of the space muppets who relay it to one another until one very special muppet whose close to your friend whispers it into their computer's SMS (star muppet socket).
No one knows where on a computer they are. No one knows. It's kind of scary to me tbh.
@cwebber imagine Bluesky DMs but decentralized
@cwebber the Simple Marketing Transport Protocol is primarily used to send spams and other unsolicited advertisements (if I've understood correctly its primary purpose!)
@cwebber
ETLA CMDS SEND MAIL FROM MUAS INTO RCPT MBOX
@cwebber
SMTP stands for: Snails Marching Towards Plants. Is a plant-protection protocol (PPP) that's being replaced by IMAP (Iñigo Montoya Avenged his Pa).
@cwebber It stands for "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol," but not one of those four words has been true since the 1970s.
Sure!
SMTP stands for Straightforward Mastodon 'Tivity Pub, and it's the mapping of Mastodon's database to the ActivityPub standard that you may have heard of. (It's not called SMAP because in Latin SMAP is a synonym for 'Jack Dorsey'.). In this thread I shall ... (1/666)
@cwebber it's a protocol that's so simple and reliable we've spent decades trying to fix that, to no avail
@cwebber it's quite simple, but don't confuse it for SNMP (it's a trap!)
@cwebber it's pronounced Smmmmmm-tup and it's the sequel to Mmmbop
@cwebber it's like a chatbot, except it does precisely what you type it to do (for better or worse)
@cwebber Imagine you have two ATproto PDSs...
SMTP stands for Sometimes Phishing 🎣
@cwebber you know how on the Fediverse you can send a message to anyone, even on another server? It's like that for DMs with no character limit. I believe they're still working on e2e encryption though. We'll get an interoperable solution any day now...
Wait, does this mean every email account can be counted as a Fediverse user? 😮
@cwebber A bunch of electrons move around and suddenly a boomer meme shows up in your inbox
Well actually SMTP stands for Standard Male Technical Pedantry.
@cwebber okay so you know activitypub. it's kind of like that but with mail. so you know how on activitypub each instance-
@cwebber so it's like snail mail but it's digital
@chrislowles @cwebber SMTP: snail mail through pipes (because as we all know, the internet is like a series of tubes).
@chrislowles @cwebber that's why it's the Snail Mail Transfer Protocol
Way way way way back in like 1992 when we were sending emails from VMS we told people to think of the SMTP they had to put at the front of an internet address as "send mail to person" and that worked okay as a mnemonic.
@cwebber It’s like e-mail.
@cwebber It just means Send Me To Pee, it's sort of a kink thing.
@cwebber you know what fax is?
its like that but with the internet
