Sometimes it means: "I'm/we're craven rat fucks, and we know it. Despite your objections, the thought of someone else *potentially* robbing/abusing you first is unbearable. So we'll act first and litigate later.
@thomasfuchs reminds me of folks who justify actions based on legality. The disconnect that happens where folks forget that laws are made by whoever is in power. That legality does not ensure morality.

@thomasfuchs is that really true in all cases? What if a comet was heading towards Earth and scientists said its inevitable that this will be a global killer. That humanities fate will inevitably be destroyed.
