@requiem

There's an ethnography am recalling from grad school about cassette tape exchange being medium of a subversive sneakernet which, if remembering correctly, involved taxi drivers for distribution. (Am wanting to say this was in Egypt, but probably have the geography wrong.)

Hey, @inquiline, does this sound familiar to you?

@beadsland not very political, but two piracy stories on Techpod #30.
Pirating games over ham radio. And...

80 year old chain-smoking woman was running a piracy ring. Constant piles of floppy drives copying discs, and you couldn't go there unless you had something to share.

@beadsland @requiem @inquiline I think it might be the Hirschkind text on cassette publics: https://cup.columbia.edu/book/the-ethical-soundscape/9780231138185/

@beadsland @requiem @inquiline also in my own art practice I've worked with taxi drivers in Cuba where they use modified radios installed in their 1950s cars to play underground music carried via USB sticks that are shared amongst themselves sneakernet style. Not as romantic as cassettes but just as effective.
