When Americans insist "it can't happen here," they’re wrong. A sociologist who studies collective memory and identity examines how the U.S. forgot its own fascist movements and what that collective amnesia means today. https://theconversation.com/america-faced-domestic-fascists-before-and-buried-that-history-268978

The Conversation

America faced domestic fascists before and buried that history

Although thousands of Americans embraced fascist ideas during the interwar years, a new study examines why the US has had little appetite to remember that past.

@TheConversationUS Are there still Americans saying that? From the outside it looks more like that there are those who are afraid that it happens currently and those who are excited that it happens currently.

@ChrisMayLA6

Buried? I think a quick glance at the non-censored mastodon instances shows you that this subculture is alive and well in the US.

This is the value of browsing the mastodon fediverse away from the big instances who censor and block.

Yes, my feed makes the common man pale but it is not censored, and it does give me more of a complete picture of reality than the big instances.

@TheConversationUS also the pseudoscience of eugenics might have started in the UK and found its apex in Nazi Germany but was developed largely in the US https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugenics_in_the_United_States
