I felt very empowered from my Dx. Years of being obviously different and being told I was depressed, I had anxiety, or at one point that I was bi polar. Years of medication, then an ongoing exhaustive battery of tests delving into every corner of my life. Interviews with my loved ones, physical observed tests. Much of which I found deeply unpleasant. Told throughout that there was a strong possibility that the final overall assessment would likely come back as inconclusive, which would be the same as a non-Dx.

AuDHD both came back in top ranges, and I was told beyond any shadow of doubt that I meet the medical criteria for both conditions. The relief, as I'm sure you've heard from others, was overwhelming. I'm not just a broken boy, wired up wrong and with no place in the world.

I then go through a period of imposter syndrome. Loved ones I trust who 'don't believe in all that'. Jokes from friends that sting. But it slowly settles as background and I become more comfortable with that part of my identity. Still not 100%, but allowing me to refer to it when I feel 'other'.

Then the national news. I've made it up. I'm clearly pretending to get benefits paid for by hardworking normal people. I'm workshy. The national debate rumbles on and I'm suddenly a baddie. There's a sense that I've done something wrong. That I'm stupid and lazy. Naive. I'm probably just depressed which isn't a real excuse for anything and I should just pull myself together. I'm weak. Contemptible.

I'm one person. But assume this is how most people have been made to feel about finally being accepted. It's made me really sad and honestly I'm trying to remain bouyant and keep my sense of humour, but it's demeaning and humiliating. And all from a health secretary who's actually trying to play the system and receives massive financial backhanders from lobbyists to speak on issues he doesn't otherwise care about. He's the one who's playing the system. Not the millions of vulnerable people with legitimate diagnoses.

I feel like I've been stripped of the power that diagnosis gave me. And once again wonder if I'm not just broken. Maybe they're right. Maybe I just don't fit. Maybe I don't deserve a reason.

@TheBreadmonkey And maybe you are just right as you are. 💐

I've always been the odd one, but other people's attitudes to our wonderfully different selves is just chaff blowing in the wind.

We are an important leavening in the bread of life. ✨

And all politician, by definition, suck.

@TheBreadmonkey Evening Ben 👋😊

I too have only recently been diagnosed AuDHD.

I feel that Wes Streeting & Robert Kennedy Jr, on the other side of the pond, are not speaking from a position of knowledge but are trying to find a new group of scape goats now they have very nearly played out the immigrants.

I refuse to let either of them belittle me, their ignorance is their failing not mine!
We were diagnosed by professionals who have spent decades training in their craft & based their conclusions in scuience not in conspiracy theories!

I do feel for those who follow us who will now face a much harder struggle (& ours was hard enough) to get the chance to get a Dx, & RFK Jr’s ‘health camps’ scare the fact out of me - it will be a sad day indeed if Wes Streeting or his successor propose something similar in the UK!

Stay strong my friend! 😊🫶party_major_squirrel🖖

@TheBreadmonkey Streeting doesn't know his arse from his elbow. He must have some rich donors hand up his arse, as he has never had an original or competent thought since he was elected.
You make the world a brighter place and are a lovely human being. You have so many people who think you are an awesome worthy human. Don't let some ignorant Muppet take that away.

I think we all feel like this sometimes. Realising that we are not broken, but just different, is such a massive thing and makes such a huge difference to our lives and self esteem. It gives us access to so much. Community, help, advice and enlightenment.
But when the outside world refuses to see, or acts as if we are frauds, or just making it up. It makes it so hard. The trick is to remember that they don't know squat. They were the one's who put us into the broken box, whether they knew it, or not. Difference is rarely understood, or wanted by them and will always put a target on our backs. And it's all too easy for them to use that for their own ends.
Basically fuck that and fuck them. Together we are stronger. And the only ones who will ever truly understand. bear_hugs

@TheBreadmonkey AuDHD late dx here too.

Idk if you're looking for sympathy, solutions, or just needing to vent, so stop reading here if you don't want advice!

I wonder if it would help to remind yourself that the people commenting that you're awesome are actually more qualified to judge than some jerk in the gov. Or to remind yourself that all of our opinions are meaningless and have nothing to do with you. But you can choose whose words to play on repeat in your head.

@TheBreadmonkey it's easier to let the negative words run on loop. Requires no effort because we've been doing it all our life. Repeating "So and So thinks I'm great" every time we think "I am broken" requires effort but eventually we'll rewrite those patterns and the mean voice will quiet and eventually go away.

Sorry you're having a rough go. ♥️

ANYWAY what normies* think is that no one really wants to work. Everyone finds some things boring and annoying to do. Everyone finds a flickering light annoying. We're all different yada yada you just need to work on your willpower BUT what they don't understand is when the willpower-button/juice doesn't bloody work!

Big picture, we’ve built a culture that is poisoning itself. It’s gonna take a while for it to begin to admit it and it will lash out in anger and stupidity much more before it does.

In the meantime, please keep being you 💚

@TheBreadmonkey It's amazing how many arseholes , who couldn't apply an elastoplast, are "experts" on neurological disorders. Docs have diagnosed you and they know what they are talking about, the rest couldn't find their own arses with both hands and a map, (they're constantly talking out of it and now think it's their mouth).
You're weird and wonderful and lots of fun, which is why thousands of us follow you.

@TheBreadmonkey It's always horrific being today's main character in UK politics. So often it feels like the subjects and the objects of politics are totally separate groups, the sort of problem that democracy was meant to fix.

Whatever the papers say or don't, you are sitting there inside your own self and plenty of people on here and elsewhere think that's pretty good.

(I've been thinking about diagnosis or not, I'm currently just being weird on an unofficial basis only)

From 11:33 they talk about the actual stats and take apart the same bollox Streeting was spouting: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0m8l4c2?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

@TheBreadmonkey Thank you for speaking out. There are lots of people in similar situations and this is partly the issue. How many people have been diagnosed with depression, etc for years, but actually have AuDHD? Yet, diagnosis is difficult with waiting lists for assessment many years long, if the service exists at all. And diagnosis does not equal unemployment and sickness benefits if employers are supportive - target employers not those affected.

@TheBreadmonkey Hi, fellow AuDHD here. You're not broken. You have a brain that works differently than the system we're forced to live in can adequately deal with. (Or is willing to, because accommodations are for them, not for us, at least not long-term.)

I'm so sorry that you're dealing with invalidation both personally and in a wider social sphere. I know it's frustrating and more than that, I know how much it hurts.

If I can gently suggest trying to find AuDHD groups to touch base with once in a while, it might help you feel less mentally isolated (because that's the aim, I think - to make us feel like what we have isn't real and to burn ourselves out trying to fit into a mould that will break us).

I know I can't do anything about the wider social issue, or about the people in your personal life that are, to be blunt, rude as fuck about your lived experience... But I can extend a "hey, you're not alone in this, your diagnosis and needs are valid, and while we may never be friends, I'd like to be friendly with you" hand.

Again, I'm so sorry you're dealing with this with such a new diagnosis. If it were 20 years on, it'd be a lot easier (I can say this from personal experience), but since you're still probably unraveling the "what's me, what's autism, what's ADHD" at times, you're getting a one-two punch at a really hard time.

Are you wired weird? You and me both, brother (although I'm probably "just" ADHD). But thanks to that diagnosis, we know where to look, whom to talk to in the wide world for advice, for understanding. We can make life good *for ourselves.*
