Consider it this way:

Threads is an ActivityPub installation with most posts running in local-only mode: federated only within the Threads 'instance' itself.

And you can opt-in to performing full-federation.

And inexplicably, every 30 days they warn you that you are fully federated, rather than running in local-only (unfederated) mode.

Yep. They really revolutionized the space alright. All those Threads users, able to effortlessly migrate off of Threads and into the fedi--

Wait, I'm just hearing that never actually happened. Huh.

@oli I suspect it's not possible to do it at all.

That's going to be a fun blog post. Go back to the origins of people talking about what a great thing it was for Meta to come to ActivityPub, and all the predictions thereof, versus what they actually did.

@oli I'm feeling pretty good about my prediction:

"As Rochko and cis white male admins of large Mastodon instances who haven't prioritized dealing with this and other issues cozy up to Meta, it'll create spaces for others in anti-Meta part of the Fediverse – and their relative lack of power in comparison to Meta will open up space in the pro-Meta region. Mastodon forks, apps and other fediverse platforms continue to innovate, but mainline Mastodon has had challenges keeping pace – and important community contributions still haven't integrated into the mainline code. And Mastodon's dominance has made it a challenge for forks and other Twitter-like implementations to get traction. That's already starting to change, and Meta's arrival will accelerate these changes."

No one seems more disillusioned with that than Gargron.
