@woozle I thought it was a good review, he highlights something that I find annoying about Hank Green, especially given he has a team, that a lot of his content is just a non nuanced regurgitation of wikipedia and media talking points. I get it, Hank has a team of people to support, and needs to keep churning out content, but it's precisely because of his wide viewership that these non nuanced takes, e.g. the recent knitting video debacle, make him just part of the mainstream media slop generation machine.
@devopscats I heard about that but not the details (nor have I managed to find the video)... I'll have to keep an eye out. (I feel like he would be responsive to reasoned criticism -- but it might also just get lost in the noise.)
@woozle he pulled the original video and did a response, which although reasoned, didn't really address the criticisms, i.e. a lot of it in that case was driven by the inherent cognitive biases that come from being a privileged white male, which being one myself to some degree, I feel more white men need to acknowledge
@devopscats Yeah, can't say I'm surprised. "He Means Well", but... :-/
@woozle yup, and I get there being some criticisms in his favour of it being overhyped, but the reality is guys in his position get a free pass most of the time, so he needs to suck it up, even if could be deemed overcorrection, which I don’t think it was, and for the most part he hasn’t doubled down like most guys do, but I don’t think he actually learned from it given this AI video came out afterwards, and although not in the same territory highlights the surface level research they do
