maybe finally reached the breaking point in moving as many remaining groups and convos from Threema to Signal:

I have to swap out my phone due to a failing display, and while Signal imports its 6GB data backup without a hitch, Threema just … dies at 3GB, probably due to lack of memory. Which is just … astounding. And bad. And I'll have to delete some data, which, wtf.

@rixx

Threema encrypts its backups with your password.

This means you always need to have at least twice as much free storage space as you want to backup.

This is what Threema itself says about this
https://threema.com/en/faq/data-backup

And you don't have to have all your media in the chat. It's better to save it as a file and then drag it over to a Threema folder on your new device!

But don't worry, after deleting a bunch of photos and videos from my largest chats, Threema now fails to complete a data backup in the first place, so that the import can't fail anymore.

Aaand reducing the backup size from 3.5GB to just under 3GB does not change anything, still crashes. Guess I'm probably just losing chat history from 2017 till now? Booo.

Ah, well, reducing the backup size to 1.3GB means that the data import now crashes much faster. Sadness.

@rixx Try negative numbers, maybe that works 👀

@rixx I think it's not about memory.
I remember that some years ago we had some corrupted survey or something like that in a chat. We actually had to unpack the zip file, remove it, pack it up again and only then we were able to restore the backup.

@rixx I had similar recently, and it's astonishing how bad #Threema still is at this
