One option is to use a timed mute, this is an option on the web interface and some third party apps.

On the web, mute the person but before you confirm the mute select "show options" and choose how long you mute them for.

(As someone else pointed out in your replies, the unlisted thing doesn't help if you're following the account).

I use timed mute so often that I wish I didn't have to click the 'show options' button each time.

Also useful when I get an enthusiastic new follower who just has to click the star for 10 or 20+ past photos. Just insure the 'Hide from Notifications' is ticked.

Yes, timed mute is so useful, especially if you are biting your tongue not to reply to a person or thread where silence would be the best option, but you don't want to fully mute them forever.

@FediTips
One thing that people need to know about mute vs block... When you mute someone, they can still reply to you but you will not be notified or have it show up in your timeline. The content will still be there and visible to you and anyone else, just not in your timeline or generate a notification

For that reason alone I prefer muting over blocking and will often mute Pluralistic's threads and go back and read them and hour later or his blog.

You can optionally allow notifications for mutes if you use the options menu (the same options that let you set a time period also have an option for allowing notifications).

But what if I don't want to mute a person. Only a post with the whole thread?
For example: It starts with a greeting leike the german word "Moin" and I was polite and send a "Moin" back. After that the thread turned into a discussion obout the worldformular and the people throwing with hashtags and it gets longer and longer until everything crashes and the world implodes *justkidding* The word will not implode cause it is not hollow inside.
Am I right?
