None of my #solarpunk talk proposals were accepted to #39c3 this year, but hey, you might enjoy reading about them:

1. Reboot: Make Punk Transgressive Again

We forgot how to transgress – we believed that Punk can be only defined in opposition to the systems of power instead of building alternative structures. Let’s reboot Punk with the curiosity, collaboration and creativity of the hacker culture!

2. Grounded Solarpunk: futures of hard work and partial victories

Let’s visit the Hackerspace and the Disabled Community, watch the Chefs try to stop the meat riots, observe a pilgrimage to the Community Center, laugh and cry with the refugees in the Tower, and feel the solidarity of the isolation of the Canteen.

As the historian Ada Palmer stated in one of her interviews, in order to imagine our civilization respond to the Climate Change, we need first to be able to acknowledge the value of partial victories and the futures of hard work.

Hollywood taught us to perceive the world in black and white, where the protagonists either completely win (saving the world) or lose. Their stories don’t have space for the daily struggles and partial victories – or relegate them to just a montage.

This is not something we can realistically aspire to, and if we try – we fail and burn out.

Let’s try to intentionally imagine a few scenes from a Grounded Solarpunk genre, a very possible tomorrow in which step by step we start dealing with the Climate Catastrophe, working together and celebrating each new foothold.

This presentation will go through a few Story Seeds and illustrations from the Story Seed Library, a repository of realistic climate art for writers interested in exploring the grounded aspect of Solarpunk. It’s paired with a podcast exploring each of these topics in much more detail, called the Solarpunk Prompts, both licensed under Creative Commons!
