Alright! Our town has our first Linux Install Party scheduled for next Saturday!

Plenty of volunteers to help out. We got a free meeting room at the library. We're installing Linux Mint as a default (but will be able to install other distros). We're putting together demo laptops this week.

Going to use this as a "first event" to iron out how to do it. Will set up to do it on a more consistent basis next year. May even make it part of the repair cafe and an official library event moving forward.

I'll let y'all know how it goes!!!

@tinker Great idea! I installed linux Ubuntu 2 weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. After decades of Microsoft products and now their latest move to control people even more, I'm done with Microsoft

@tinker Not the first install party in Fredericksburg. We did several with FredLUG 15 odd years ago. Glad to see they are still happening!

@tinker @linuxaustralia - this would be an interesting idea if you could get volunteers...

@rowlandm @linuxaustralia - I just asked around, posted in the towns local subreddit, hopped in a few town hacker discords, and spoke to some of my friends.

I'm honestly worried we have more volunteers than we'll get attendees 🤣😅

@tinker @rowlandm @linuxaustralia a great idea.
I work in Linux support, half the battle is getting people to install it, the other half is helping them past the pain points
- connect to wifi
- printer
- patching.
Most linuxen should make that easy, but people are people, and will want help.
I'm sure you've got it sorted, though.

@tinker All Linux distros have problems with video codecs. I use OpenSUSE, which has good instructions for it. https://en.opensuse.org/Codecs

@tinker this is awesome! Please share how the event went. I would want to host a similar event when I return to the US.

@tinker I stuck Mint on my 2011 Quad-core Phenom. Seemed like a good "f-around" choice.
