Chinese tech company DJI launches a robot vacuum with built in cameras and advertises that you can call up the vacuum from anywhere and look around your home.

On their website, they even found it relevant to show the vacuum looking around someone’s bedroom.

Let’s recap: China + camera = suveillance in your bedroom.

That’s a hard pass.

@randahl

Volunteering to let a new Chinese robot vacuum - with cameras, microphone and, presumably, an independent Internet connection - into your house and bedroom?

ignorance is curable, stupidity is terminal.

@randahl in 2025 I’m far more concerned about US spying on me than China.

If you had said cloud instead of China, I would agree with you. I am not of interest to China, neither Chinese nor someone working against their regime, so for me (and many other people in this part of the world), AWS+NSA is a much larger threat.

And if your behaivior does not comply with the chinese gouvernment policy, the vacuum cleaner will be switched off permanently. Brave new world, indeed...

Oh, so cool. Does it also depend on cloud services to operate? Would be exciting if AWS went down, and the thing started chasing your cat around the house.

There were 2 guys looking at Wi-Fi routers at Best buy. They asked me if I knew anything about routers, and I said I knew a little bit. They asked what I thought of Tp-link, and I told them they should Google The Washington Post article about #tp-link and Chinese hacking. They chose another brand.
