“To be a Luddite today is to refuse the fatalism of techno-inevitability & to demand that technology serve the many, not the few. It is to assert that questions of labor, agency & justice must come before speed, efficiency & scale.” https://www.brookings.edu/articles/we-should-all-be-luddites/

@aworkinglibrary

@aworkinglibrary I agree with the overall message of the article. It's too bad, though, that it's riddled with "it's not just [X], it's [Y]" (and subtle variations on the same). I'm not sure if the author *intentionally* decided to overuse ChatGPT's favourite rhetorical device, but I counted at least twelve instances of it...

@aworkinglibrary this is perfect timing. On multiple occasions recently I’ve considered saying, “I’m not a Luddite, but….” thinking wrongly that Luddites don’t like technology. I love tech but hate AI and so-called advancements in surveillance. It sounds like a number of Luddites might feel similarly

@aworkinglibrary That’s delightful. I wrote my senior compaci professional ethics capstone on Ludd back in 20010, and it’s amazing how much I underestimated.

@aworkinglibrary In the words of some tech writer I can’t recall, the choice is clear:

When humans merge with technology, you become a ”centaur” in some sense. With the current direction the development is towards a ”reverse-centaur”.

In Silicon Valley’s model, only those at the very top would be in the driver’s seat with technology, while the rest of us would be bossed around by a machine head instead, doomed to be the organic legs running errands for a centralised machine.
