Pretty sure what happened is that they reset the schedule mode to the the new destination, but that accidentally reset the "current station" to the first in the line, and they only noticed one station later.

I guess the display is "blind" and just driven by the train stopping and doors opening.

@lina can’t speak for the ones in Japan, but I worked on trains in Australia, which had a stopping pattern programmed into them. It used a combination of GPS and dead reckoning to work out where it is in the stopping pattern, but this relied on the crew to enter the run number correctly, along with making any manual changes due to cancellations or delays. It would warn the crew if the selected run did not match the current train location.

@piepants @lina I'm pretty sure the Sydney Trains network has some sort of awareness of where each train is because when you check AnyTrip (GTFS-R?), you can see which signal block each train is located in. Even though I can imagine this can be determined with GPS, surely this is determined by the train with eurobalise or some other track-side signalling solution?
