Exposure to "AI Assistance" lowers doctors' ability to diagnose cancer just after a few weeks.

"AI"s main effect on people is skill decay.

@tante Keep in mind the study is from 2021-2022, so nothing to do with GPT, LLM craze.

They got dependent on the tool.

It's the user's responsibility to maintain a quality of work. You don't blame the hammer because the builder took a shortcut.

@tante I had a survey come round today asking which AI I used and what tasks I used it for. I had to put "I don't" in the 'Other' option since not using one at all didn't appear to be one of the options.

AI, like any other tool…can be used for good, or evil.
This is a different perspective…although I’m suspicious of this study…

But... But... But.... If I don't use "AI" how will I ever demolish the environment while churning out mountains of garbage based on stolen content and forgetting how to actually do anything?!?!?!

"I used AI to....", is nothing more than, "Listen I'm not an asshole but....", for the 21st Century.

@tante The conclusion was: Continuous exposure to AI might reduce the ADR of standard non-AI assisted colonoscopy, suggesting a negative effect on endoscopist behaviour.

@tante According to the study, it lowers their ability to diagnose without the use of AI. So they become dependent on the tool.

If I read this correctly, it didn't study whether their overall ability to diagnose was reduced.

@tante Well, it's like when we get used to using a calculator and stop knowing how to divide or calculate certain operations without it. What's so strange about that? I guess the same goes for any tool...

@the_heruman @tante @festal I agree. It is not an argument against AI in particular but against all widely used tools supporting an already existing skill. My handwriting skills have deteriorated because for more than two decades I have mainly been writing on keyboards. However, I really love computers for shaping me this way.

@acka47 @the_heruman @tante @festal It is, if your whole job’s endpoint is “seeing and diagnosing cancer,” which it is, for an endoscopist. This isn’t like an AI scribe or something.

“Computer” used to be a job description, and not a machine; the tool obliterated the job, which was fine, because we decided it was better that way.

Do we not want cancer doctors? If we still do, skill decay *at diagnosis* is a very bad outcome.

We need a synonym for skill that starts with A, and a synonym for decay that starts with I (or vice versa).

Weird that they lost the number of patients in the abstract and not the number of doctors when the thing being tested is the doctors' ability Okay let's go
