point to the obvious main vector for #wildfires: #climateChange
but there’s some like @span theconversationes that go into more specifics: the abandonment of rural economies.

and those rural areas have been controlled by the largest conservative party in the country, which is why their opposition have started to point fingers to them:

the #wildfires consuming #Spain are also consuming Portugal because the fires started in their shared Galicia region and it’s extended from there.

apparently #Portugal doesn’t have firefighting airplanes to deal with the fires and has had to ask Marruecos #Morocco for help:

and, then there’s Italy, where the #wildfires have been raging along Mount Vesuvio:

i’ve spent time in this news curation exercise ―a reporting practice i helped pioneer more than 20 years ago on my blogs and social media― to show y’all that the #fediverse is a place to get the news. and that’s in part thanks to one company: @span Flipboard
we need now to convince citizen journalists, bloggers and hyperlocal publications that having a presence in the #fediverse is, in the era of AI slop and #enshittification, more important than ever.
i would need to switch VPN localities to have access to the amounts of headlines from spanish, french, italian, portuguese sources i get here ―on #Mastodon’s own search engine― than on ANY www search engine. they all rely on either Google or Bing slop. Mastodon doesn’t.
BTW i don’t know who is behind @span TheConversationUS but just found out they put out editions in french @span ConversationFR and spanish @span theconversationes
in their Spanish edition i found this article written by a group of scholars from the Universidad de Navarra about how the abandonment of rural economies is contributing to #climateChange and the extreme #droughts#sequías that cause #wildfires #incendios forestales:
