If you want the Fediverse to succeed, you need to step out and understand why other folks aren't joining.

Sure, you can post negatively about the alternatives using an ActivityPub account where no one else can see it, or you can go to the other platforms and tell them why you look down upon them. But neither of those is working, right?

Identify what we're missing. Build it. Work with makers. Fund projects. Stop yelling in your bubble. And, for god's sake, stop spreading misinformation.

@quillmatiq@mastodon.social will you block me if I disagree with you?

Fediverse's problems are entirely self-inflicted, and almost completely social and cultural. Not technological.

https://ulveon.net/p/2025-01-21-fediverse-and-the-consequences-of-decentralised-moderation/

You cannot use technology to fix a fundamentally social problem. There's no "building" Fediverse. The only likely possibility I see of Fediverse succeeding is for some major player to monopolise it, like Google did to email via Gmail.

And funnily enough, many folks in Fedi reject that notion. Some even block mastodon.social in order to encourage diversification.

Is the Fediverse not succeeding?

What is the definition of having the Fediverse succeed?

@quillmatiq What if the thing that's missing to bring more people to the alternative networks is just more people they want to follow that are still on Twitter? How do we bring all people at the same time?…

@mackuba You don't need to bring all the people at one time! Build communities and products on this side that make it a viable place to swap to. TikTok didn't have users overnight, they just made a better case for a specific kind of creator and consumer.

The open social web also has the advantage of variety if we actually try to create it. We don't need everybody on one platform, we just need people to find a platform that's on an open protocol that can connect to the wider network.

@fubaroque No, I think creating an accessible space for as many people as possible is success, and not misinforming or looking down on others in the process is an important part of it

@quillmatiq i see talk about fediverse all time on bluesky. I see devs contributings. The fediverse is growing slowly but surely. There are many things that should get improved, nobody oppose that.

@hiphopheaven Yes, folks are discussing it, and I love to see it! But there are a lot of large accounts here who choose to rile people up over things just to be tribal. It's a frustrating experience.

Are we expecting everyone to join because you think we're ideologically better?

Is being mean to people who enjoy using another platform part of your ideology? Is telling people the software they use makes them a lesser person part of your ideology? Is telling half-truths about other options part of your ideology?

I can't tell if some folks just want to be big fish in a small pond or simply don't understand how to make the pond more accessible.

@quillmatiq thank you for this and absolutely resonate.

Which is why i'm so excited to chat IRL and hear about what folks are working on (in terms of design & solutions) at #fedicon2025 @fedicon

Thanks to @reiver for organizing @manlycoffee for inviting Vancouver.dev

The next gen of devs, designers, BIPOC x LGBT+ folks have many ideas & positive things to share

IMHO face-to-face communication at this unconference is so vital! We need online and offline conversations and connections to truly build the kind of Fedi we want to see! Will see u there, Anuj :)

@ProgressiveLurker A protocol doesn't have a culture and isn't owned by one demographic, that makes it no better than a closed platform owned by a small group of people
