In just 5 hours over 80,000 people signed up to receive updates and be contacted for possible membership from Jeremy Corbyn's and Zarah Sultana's new political party at yourparty.uk/

Due to my involvement in EU politics I informed myself a lot regarding the Party of the European Left (a European party consisting of many national left parties of many EU and non-EU states), which still has British members and observer members!

From the UK they have:

  • Transform Party (observer member)
  • Democratic Left Scotland (EL Partner)
  • Socialists for Independence [Scotland] (EL Partner)

However, the only full member is “Left Unity”. A party that was kind of relevant 2013 when Ken Loach (yes, that one) founded it as a party to replace Labor. In 2014, the party had 2,000 members and 70 branches across Britain, nowadays it seems to be just a glorified blog, promoting Jeremy Corbyn's new party.

If anyone has any further information on this party or its plans (possibly merging or being the foundation for Corbyn's party?), or is personally affiliated with it, let me know! I find this very interesting and lots of common info just doesn't make its way over here to Germany.

@ErikUden you should look into 'Bulgarian Left', which Wikipedia lists as a member of PEL. It was created as a splinter BSP - the party the totalitarian Bulgarian Communist Party renamed itself to after the fall of their regime. Why? Because Bulgarian Left did not think the literal communist nomenclature were left enough.

The chair of the Bulgarian Left party? An agent of the communist secret police. He was recruited to spy and report on fellow students and professors, and also spread...

@burningTyger He was the leader of Labour and did not make antisemitic statements. He claimed a report of antisemitism within Labour was exaggerated and blown up by the news, which I agree with. This reframing of antisemitism being something the left does when they criticize Israel is widely used by conservative and far right forces to find yet another reason to demonize the left while hurting the important fight against antisemitism.

@ErikUden Due to the UK's first past the post system if this new party puts up candidates in most constituencies it could hand a win to a right wing alliance (Reform + Conservatives) in the next election. Reform's 34% in that chart is already higher than Labour's 33.7% at the last election where they won 63% of the seats.

Hopefully Labour will see this and either start representing the people better or change the voting system to be more proportional. Sadly neither look likely.

@ErikUden Truth be told, the NFP just didn't work owing to the massive internal infighting (IMHO having watched it unfold). But even then, the NFP only came into existence after the left was essentially wiped out for two elections in a row.

That means eight more years of extreme Austerity and suffering before we get anywhere near enough to power to fix it. The far right will have a decade to dismantle the country even further.
