@cstross The soups we like to make tend to be sturdy, not the watery stuff. A fork might not be the most efficient thing but would definitely work at least somewhat. I like to call it "stewp".
@cstross My ex defined "proper soup" as one that you can stick your spoon into and the spoon keeps standing. She was from the north-eastern corner of Poland. They have harsher winters there and the line between a soup and a gravy gets blurred. The further south you go, the thinner the soups get.
