[AI appropriation is super messed up. In addition to Lakotaman'ing, non-Native people are learning (false) Native culture and history from fake sources that completely drowns out real Native voices.]

Native Americans have worked hard for decades to counter the stereotypes perpetuated in old movies and television shows about the American West. Now a new generation of Native technology experts worry that AI is eroding that work.

Native America Calling

Thursday, February 19, 2026 – The growing AI appropriation threat » Native America Calling

Native Americans have worked hard for decades to counter the stereotypes perpetuated in old movies and television shows about the American West. Now a new generation of Native technology experts worry that artificial intelligence is eroding that work. Scores of AI-generated images and videos are flooding people’s social media For You pages. The creations are within easy reach of anyone typing a prompt into any AI generator that scrapes information from millions of sources. Often posted by anonymous creators, the products of those prompts present vaguely Native visual and audio characteristics with little to no authentic cultural connections. Along the way they generate hundreds of thousands of admirers. We’ll talk about the work to counter the looming onslaught of AI cultural appropriation. GUESTS Dr. Angelo Baca (Diné and Hopi), professor of history, philosophy, and social sciences at the Rhode Island School of Design Trevor Reed (Hopi), professor of law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law and an associate justice for the Hopi Tribe Court of Appeals Dr. Tamika Worrell (Gamilaroi), senior lecturer of critical Indigenous studies at Macquarie University

@Yehuda

There is only one political party in #australia that has #firstnation considerations in its #Aipolicy

In fact, it is the only party that has 👉any👈 AI policy, now that ruling #alp (Labor) has entirely abandoned any efforts to #regulateai

That party is #greens

Of course none of the 5 tribes use tipis. The images also had massive snow capped Rocky Mountains in the background. The whole thing was something that never happened.

I chastised a few people I know in real life for following these type of accounts. Mostly they don't care, their own vibe and experience is more important than actual modern Native voices or factual history even.

Facebook is the worst. I've posted in the past about the proliferation of mostly Vietnamese in origin 'Native American' accounts there that usually are fronts for t-shirt companies. In the past they heavily leaned on stereotypes & historical figures. Huge followings far beyond real Native accounts.

With #AI it got real goofy. I remember one I saw that showed people camping along the way of the #TrailOfTears in tipis. I was like WTF. 1000s & 1000s of shares/likes.
