So much Discord discussion today! I'll just throw my own personal experience into the ring here.
Discord has gamification built in that is fun - cute animations, flair, etc. you can buy or earn. If you're looking for that, I don't have options for you, sorry.
I've used @zulip for a few projects I check in on, and liked it enough that I have considered recommending it at work. It's a combination of a forum and chat room.

@box464 @zulip have you experience using #Mattermost at all? Do you know how it compares to Zulip.
@UkiahSmith I have heard the words Mattermost but no experience with it. Same with Movim, which I just heard about today. @movim
@jenniferplusplus @box464 Do you self host Zulip? How much effort does it require?
@UkiahSmith The two open source projects I’ve seen are self hosted. But they have a free cloud based offering too, with a more limited feature set.
You have channels, and then you create topics within those channels to keep conversations on track.
It's super nice for dev specific rooms where users come in to ask questions (you can mark items as "solved" or "closed") and it makes it easy to find those conversations later.
But...flair? Tags? Welcome bots and games? I haven't seen that there yet.
I've tried IRC and Matrix, too. Matrix is fine but I've seen some moderation issues there.

@box464 does Zulip have private rooms or channels, where only some users would be able to access them?
@UkiahSmith It seems to have private channels, but I've never been invited to one - a few DMs tho. It doesn't look like you can make a topic within a channel have different permissions, tho.
@box464 okay, that's good to know. I've admired Zulip from afar before but never used it. Looks like it could be a replacement for Discord for our needs.
