> Good news, today France is gradually 'moving'

Thanks for this news. First I've heard of Visio. A quick web search found the official homepage here;

https://lasuite.numerique.gouv.fr/produits/visio

... and source code here;

https://github.com/suitenumerique/

Wouldn't surprise me if it's using the Matrix protocol under the hood, as a lot of EU governments have been developing official comms tools that do.

Looking again at the Visio repo on GH, the project intro says;

"Open source video conferencing app powered by LiveKit."

https://github.com/suitenumerique/meet

LiveKit is a project implementing MatrixRTC, and is a member of the @matrix Foundation;

https://matrix.org/blog/2025/04/25/this-week-in-matrix-2025-04-25/

So yeah, looks like a Matrix-based solution.

@strypey @hughbarnard @Iveyline it’s not matrix based, but it could be - the easiest way to make it e2ee and/or decentralised would be to use MatrixRTC signalling on top of the generic LiveKit approach they have right now.

@hughbarnard
> I don't use Matrix, but conceptually 'ordinary' users seem to find it hard

I don't understand why. You install the app (or browse to the web app), create an account, and chat to people. Just like any other chat app.

Yes, starting a chat or searching for a user/ room requires giving a full address instead of just a name (@person:domain.foo or #room:domain.foo). But that's never stopped people using email.

Is it the 'choose an instance' paralysis perhaps?
