Is #Zigbee still a thing?

If I was to invest in #HomeAutomation (thermostat and sockets mainly), which protocol should I choose?

It should be local only ( #HomeAssistant) and work even when the server is down.

@thiccpaws
Of course, #zigbee is still a (big) thing. We have 50+ routers and end devices in use.

Tons of devices available for very little money. In particular if you buy them on Aliexpress etc

Great integration into #homeassistant using #zigbee2mqtt

@abulling @thiccpaws Yup. Although I’m slowly switching to esp32 just because I have better control over and can design custom sensors etc. still zigbee is cheap and in most cases does what it needs to do. All my Dimmers and some of the socket sensors are zigbee.

So yeah zigbee if you want things to work our of the box. EspHome if you want to thinker with stuff.

@muppeth @abulling my question probably is more “do big brands still support Zigbee, or have they moved to something else? I remember having purchased Ikea sockets before, but not sure their latest devices still use the zigbee standard.
I really don’t want to replace all my bulbs and switches every other year.

@thiccpaws @abulling Dunno. I do all I can to not buy devices from big brands.
