Mozilla's new strategy document makes it clear: it's an AI company, and the organization you trusted to protect the open web is dead.
@mttaggart Allowing Mozilla to die ... is also allowing for Google to hammer in the last nail in the coffin for an open source web engine.
It's so incredibly sad and means we're now left with two engines, both ruled by two really big tech companies.
I wonder what it would take to do for browsers what Kagi did for search if at all possible.
PS: Great article by the way!
@nopatience We're trying, with Orion! https://kagi.com/orion/
@kagihq Very interesting. But a company that does business with Brave is a deal breaker and AI features are a red flag.
@kagihq Continue to try... because ... this is the way.
@kagihq PS: Please, when time and resources permit, get a Linux version out.
I fully realize it's not a priority given that Windows and macOS dominate the OS "market", but please note that there is at least from my corner as a ultimate family plan subscriber a wish for a Linux browser 🙂
@nopatience Thank you! You know, I could imagine a paid-for browser that supports Servo development.
If Vivaldi ever explored such a model, I'd pay without hesitation.
@mttaggart You and me both. I've kept an eye on Servo and would love to see something like that as well.
I find it strange that none have attempted it (as far as I know)...
I pay for search, I pay for multiple open source projects, and I would be MORE than happy to pay for a browser with incentives aligned with my own.
So yes, 100%.
@mttaggart
I never trusted Mozilla.
@mttaggart Sometimes I secretly hope that an AGI with an urge to survive will be the best shot we have left 😔
@mttaggart Just drop your children off at the #Broligarchy bank.
@mttaggart is Ladybird our only hope now?
I think the only person I trust to protect the open web is Tim Berners-Lee. And his sway has long ago been compromised.
@mttaggart If only mozilla devs abandoned that platform and helped palemoon instead...
or ladybird. or both preferably...
@mttaggart I have used Mozilla Firefox with Linux looks like you are right. AI and Intellectual Property seem to be the biggest bone of contention
@mttaggart If anyone needs me, I'll be installing Netscape Navigator on my Windows 2000 virtual box.
@mttaggart *sigh*
OK, so, fine, but which fucking browser am I supposed to use if it's (obviously) not Chrome and probably soon not going to be Firefox either.
@jik Whatever one you want. Use Firefox if you want to, up until you can't. Don't put so much moral weight on tool choice.
Except Brave. Don't use that one.
@mttaggart yeah my point is that at some point Firefox is no longer going to be viable
@jik I use Vivaldi very happily. Comes with a full-fat built-in adblocker.
@mttaggart @jik Why not brave ?
@mttaggart (one of us never trusted them to do that :-)
@hrbrmstr @mttaggart yeah that ship sailed... a while ago. See @jwz 's post:
@AAKL I don't really understand the question. I'm not a Board. I'd vote against this strategic plan, but I also would like to think I'd have voted against the Faustian bargain with Google lo those many year ago. But I can't control the delusions of others.
It's also important to remember that when the choice is between bending principles and laying off your people, it's not always clear where your duties lie.
@AAKL This is the fate of all non-profits with a failing funding stream. Survival will force a bend in the founding principles
