@jonny nono see there's an ethical safe version of all this that nobody else thought to try, that doesn't involve scraping the web in an unsustainable predatory fashion and filling up the Grand Canyon with burning tires, that performs just as well (by some theoretical not-dubious metric) and they're gonna do that. but also they're gonna integrate support for Mecha Hitler & Friends because 6 billion people already use and love that and depend on it for food - you don't want them to starve right?

@jonny > AI isn’t just another tech trend — it’s at the heart of most apps, tools and technology we use today.

That is literally not true... I am using the computer right now without any "AI" programs on it and everything is fine

In fact, the only program that is trying to push "AI" on me is the Firefox web browser

@jonny > Mission Empower people with tech that promotes agency and choice – make AI for and about people.

They keep talking about "choice" and yet do not respect my choice of not wanting any of that stuff in the web browser that already drains enough resources as is

If they were serious about choice, they'd give me an easy-to-find button to turn all the "AI" off and not covertly push an update adding "Perplexity" as the search engine

Mozilla has lost the plot. LLM / Generative AI is a bubble, a Ponzi scheme, a stealer of copyright work and a producer of plausible junk. Destroying planet and dedicated LLM AI companies can't make money directly.

It is not at the heart of most apps, tools and technology unless you are a Meta, X or Microsoft fan. MS is destroying their OS and products with it. Google, X and Meta are exploitive and AI is their most recent attempt at it.

@jonny yeah. Like okay brainrot and everyone is doing it. But "everyone" are entities with limitless money. Mozilla ain't that - especially knowing how much stuff they cut in order to save.

@jonny AI is just another tech trend. Or the LLM version of AI. Five years from now I expect people will laugh about how ridiculous the AI trend chasing was, and how little value it really delivered.

25 years ago we out competed a buggy web browser by making a less buggy web browser. that's why today we're choosing to engage in the same field of play that the largest companies in the world, which are orders of magnitude more powerful than they were 25 years ago, are betting their entire futures on. while they can rewrite the state of the economy at a whim, dropping nuclear power plants along critical infrastructure and taxation optimums, we have the scrappy heart of a lion.

one day they'll find a dusty pdf on some forgotten floor of the googleplex detailing how they eked out 1% greater profit by derailing the only credible hope for a different internet at scale by telling them that they were tech visionaries and geniuses capable of anything they put their minds to.

Its like someone locked some people in a room and didn't tell them anything about how AI was being competed over and how computing hardware had changed in 20 years and said "and only you can fix this problem."

Like did they miss how all the companies are basically having to buy off entire towns to produce enough electricity because the amount of electricity it takes to compete in this arms race causes the water to become poison
