Lots of truly terrible stuff is happening in the US government, but 2 senators just reintroduced the "Dark and Quiet Skies Act" to protect the sky from light pollution and satellite pollution and that's a really big step in the right direction! https://www.hickenlooper.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Dark-and-Quiet-Skies-Act-119th-Congress.pdf

@sundogplanets

So ... does the bill allow for enforcement by shooting the infringing satellites down? Or, to avoid having the re-enter atmosphere, knocking them into the sun. If not, it's not serious.

Obviously I'm being silly. And a little wishful thinking.

@sundogplanets @Jillianmarisa OMG, do we really need this! Every time they put in another fucking data center they light the damn thing up like they're expecting an alien spacecraft to come and land there. It is the absolute worst part of these data centers.

Even Republicans recognize that Elon Musk has & will use his Starlink satellites to benefit himself & his technocrats.

Placing private for-profit monopolies in charge of national security is a very bad idea.

Musk works for the fossil fuel interests frying the planet.
https://kyivindependent.com/ukraine-affected-as-starlink-suffers-global-outage/

He's made Starlink deliberately unreliable for personal & partisan gain.
https://www.reuters.com/investigations/musk-ordered-shutdown-starlink-satellite-service-ukraine-retook-territory-russia-2025-07-25/

All of Europe is at risk as Starlink outages are used to foil Ukraine's defense.

https://www.politico.eu/article/poland-is-ready-to-seek-starlink-alternatives-if-musk-proves-unreliable/

Controlling the means of global communication in preparation for fossil fuel funded fascism is what matters most to Musk & his cronies.

Low earth orbit space junk from Musk's poor-quality satellites have the potential to foil missile detection of ICBM's

Atlantic Council

Russian nuclear anti-satellite weapons would require a firm US response, not hysteria

If fielded, such weapons would directly challenge norms of responsible behavior in space and present a serious risk to all nations’ satellites.

Of course, meanwhile, the FCC has put forward a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking describing itself as a "licensing assembly line" https://www.fcc.gov/document/space-modernization-21st-century-nprm so I"m not super hopeful. But it will maybe educate a few people in government if nothing else?
