Pretty messed up that umlaut doesn't have an umlaut.

@Alice

Umlaut lacks an umlaut (both the symbol and the vowel shift), but if you write for the *New Yorker*, you *might* put the similarly-shaped dieresis in “diëresis”.

@Alice Maybe it does have an umlaut, but a wide one so that the dots line up with the top of the u, and we can't tell it's there.

@Alice Well, then it'd be an umläut, ümlaut or ümläut, and that'd be just silly, wouldn't it?

(umlaüt is not an umlaut, you pleb)

On the other hand, röck döts can be used in anÿ pläce.

@Alice

If that's the two dots over a vowel, I think it's what we call "tøddel" in Norwegian

And Ø is the Norwegian equivalent of the Swedish Ö

But sadly, the Swedish word for "tøddel" is "trema"...

However!
It's not unheard of to use Swedish vowels instead of the Norwegian ones if a computer has the wrong charset installed, so you will TOTALLY get away with spelling it as "töddel" in Norwegian! 🤗

Then the umlaut's umlaut would need an umlaut and that would be umlaut inception...
