A minor detail: the japanese conviction rate isn't really unusually high. It's partly about different ways to gather statistics; and partly a function of different systems. Many cases that would be acquittals in other countries never lead to arrests in the first place and so they don't count.
@theintercept I kinda get why the assassin did it tbh, and I understand the 'Luigi Mangione' style folk hero story around him.

This is a really interesting but tragic story. I learned things that I had no idea about. I remember the "moonies" being a big thing in the USA in the 70's and early 80's. I was approached by one when walking around by myself in San Francisco back then. The volunteer woman invited me to dinner without disclosing her affiliation, but the sign at the address clearly displayed "Unification Church."
