A new Microsoft Teams feature will let organizations track employees based on nearby WiFi networks.

According to privacy experts, the new feature will allow companies to crack down on workers who dodge return-to-office mandates.

@campuscodi @briankrebs you don’t need Teams tracking WiFi to “crack down” on people not returning to the office.

You look at their desk during office hours. Are they say at their desk? No? Have a chat with them about the organisation’s flexible working policy. Simple.

Stop demonising technology (because this is absolutely not the intent of this feature).

@campuscodi so if you turn off Wi-Fi on your laptop and use an Ethernet to Wi-Fi adapter like this, that should take care of the problem, shouldn't it?

@campuscodi wouldn't it be easier to simply block connections that don't come from the corporate network?

@campuscodi You know, I wasn't terribly fond of Microsoft when I was still a pc user, but now I have even more reason to abhor them, beyond the fact that their technology was knowingly enployed against innocent Palestinians.

@campuscodi The company I work for requires a VPN connection for remote work. They could shut my access off at any time and tell me to go to the office. I guess it checks out that companies may be more interested in controlling their work force than security.

@campuscodi

I don't get that technically. It wouldn't work with teams in browser because browser wouldn't provide the wifi ssid.

Companies can get ip adresses of the worker.

@campuscodi I think "let track" and "allow" are not the right words.
The "location", for some definition of that word, is already known, and security policies use that information already for e.g. 2FA enforcement.

The difference might be that your manager can now easily see where you are.

@campuscodi I don't understand, using the login feature you can see where people are, it's part of indentity management. So to track where people work iphas been very easy for ages with #microsoft tools
