@n8dmt Gary, it’s funny I went to dig in my parts and found some similar labeled envelopes to what you described. I tried to organize once LOL 😅

@relistan

A boy writes "I do not need a 3D printer" repeatedly on a classroom chalkboard, with a waste bin and desks nearby. A clock and a picture hang on the wall.

@relistan Nice! I used small paper envelopes in cardboard strip divided shoe boxes for many years, holding parts by major types (7400, CMOS, Resistors, Transistors, etc.). Worked great with room to write on envelopes what was within. Your solution will work great - with small challenge of labeling drawers with multiple contents. Please share pics as this progresses. Thanks & 73

@n8dmt Thanks! I imagine I will have several passes at labeling. 🙈 Initially I may 3D print some plastic labels to slide into the little label slot. If those are too annoying or slow, I will just scribble on some cardboard. My idea was to have drawers labeled by what kind of thing is in them (or range in some cases), and then stick labels on the inner back of each cubby showing what the value is. Right now I have various cardboard boxes full of random stuff...

@n8dmt Some things, like surface mount, lend themselves better to folders and binders than drawers, and I think I'll stick with that there.

@relistan @n8dmt What are you using for your binders? I have a big binder of parts with four different kinds of plastic thing-holder sheets, but I'm gradually moving them back out to the latching "shoe" bins I use for everything else.

(Photo negative sheets: strips fit but fall out. Baseball card sheets: impossible to get things in and out. Some pocket-y things, like card sheets but the pocket is half-height, works okay with part bags bulkily folded. Full-sheet holders: lol, no, just no.)

@AJ9BM @n8dmt I bought a set of resistors that came in one of these definitely cheapo books and I’m going to order another empty book.

@relistan Recall buying 100 packs of little envelopes multiple times - always finding more (and more) parts to be bagged and shoe boxed. The shoe boxes multiplied over time…

Sadly, that was before moving cross country multiple times in a short period of time. Starting over with ADALM2000 and TI MyParts kits, but poor substitute for past capabilities. Slowly building up parts again. Treasure parts if you have them.

@n8dmt Yeah, I hear you. I never had tons and tons of stuff, but I moved internationally a few times (US -> Germany -> UK -> US -> Ireland) and now have a small amount of the stuff I had. So far... not too much I've missed, but I was doing more digital stuff then and I imagine if I started that up again, I would notice! I also have an analog photography hobby and I held onto more of that stuff. Thankfully.
