Or the combination of a spying OS and a locked-down bootloader.

Vendors have long been engaged in creating the perception that it's normal that OS and device are outside the user (and nominal owner's!) control.

This level of centralized control over personal devices has always been a potentially fascism-enabling circumstance.

It was never acceptable and will never be.
