Criminy, the difference between me working with one or two full sized monitors is a huge difference in productivity

It's really hard to get things done sometimes without having a full second monitor. The laptop screen really doesn't suffice.

@cwebber Or as the late great #TerryPrachett said, "People ask me why I have six monitors on my desk, and the answer is that I haven't got room for eight."

@cwebber Oh yes. I have two 32" 4k monitors on my desk. How anyone can do productive work on a little HD postage stamp I have no idea. You can never have too many pixels.

Actually this is a long term trend with me. At Uni in the 80s a terminal was 80x25 characters. I used to go into the lab late so I got two monitors, one for the editor and one for the program I was developing.

@cwebber at university, I was working on a small 11" laptop, doing webdev. What I did was firefox fullscreen and F12 would drop a terminal covering like 60% of the screen. I worked with tmux + vim. It was nice

@cwebber I run two large externals with the laptop as my slack/email display because I cannot work purely off a laptop monitor.

Even if I'm sitting in the living room, I have a small portable external I use on a table next to the chair because MUST HAVE ALL THE DISPLAYS

@cwebber I always used to have a vertical monitor on the right. You are reminding me I need to work on my "cockpit" per se.

@cwebber a 3rd monitor was a smaller but noticeable improvement and a 4th was a distraction to me.

@cwebber I miss being able to do that. Since I screwed up my neck I haven't been able to use a second screen because I gotta keep better posture for long hours of computer now or I get hurt.

@cwebber the fact that they don't really make desktop monitors that are small AND good means I have this massive 4k monitor and I run everything windowed mode. I've got ideas for a custom window manager to better take advantage of the periphery, but I don't have time for a project like that and I wouldn't be able to use such a thing on my work computer anyway.

@mauve I'm very interested in that direction! Have you been doing this? If so, how's it been going for you?

@cwebber I've been using a less fancy version without the head tracking and I've found it better than laptop screens when I'm on the go. I'm gonna save up a bit to get this new model later this year though.
Would probs need the perscription lens inserts to see clearly. With my current setup I take breaks every 3 hours or more. My current glasses: https://pro.viture.com/

@mauve You may have seen my writeup about the DIY FOSS Cyborg guy's setup https://dustycloud.org/blog/the-diy-foss-cyborg/

Zacchae claims no eye fatigue in using the XReal Airs with prescription inserts, though that doesn't seem to be the case generally for many people I've seen writing about it

I have enough eye fatigue as is, that's maybe the main thing holding me back

@cwebber @mauve

I have the XReal Air2 pros and now the One Pro.

i love them for movies/tv and gaming with steam deck. it’s great! i use it all the time and recommend it. eye strain is not too bad.

BUT… i don’t love the resolution and text aliasing, especially when moving your head when stabilized. it is workable for sure, and can serve well in a pinch - but i find it unpleasant for work in any real capacity.

@cwebber @mauve I have the Viture Pro and yeah I get some eye fatigue from it after a while. The FoV is also pretty disappointing, which might be unavoidable with glasses that use birdbath optics like these

I'm hoping in the next few years we'll see glasses with waveguides that you could conceivably just wear as your regular glasses and then boom it's a display when you plug it in

@cwebber @mauve Also a weird thing I've noticed that may be tricky to compensate for: my heartbeat through the frames makes the virtual display visibly shake a bit

@cwebber Yeah if your eyes are having trouble it might make things worse. One tip I got thanks to @burrito.space was to have the screen blank out periodically to force you to give your eyes a break which I've been meaning to incorporate

@mauve It's struck me before that if I were to persue a full cyborg setup, I might want to use the same boards that MNT is already using on their computers, since I'd like to see that direction of computing succeed. And @mntmn posted this thing a bit ago https://mastodon.social/@mntmn/114241921879862683 which makes me wonder whether that's a positive possible direction for full cyborg-dorkification

@cwebber @mntmn My gameplan right now is to get a framework mobo on a portable 3d printed case. https://www.printables.com/model/1051364-framework-13-mainboard-case-with-battery

My GPD WIN 4 setup has been pretty good TBH. Getting the physical keyboard + controllers in my hands has been handy. Been doing presentations with my HMD as a teleprompter lately and doing supervised walking while coding on the go.
