In one astonishing tale, Wilson shows how the physicists Hans Bethe and Richard Garwin were “assertively hand-held” by Scientific American into becoming unexpected nuclear whistleblowers—after submitting a draft to support the weapon their article eventually opposed

One of the things I think the Star Wars franchise got right where others failed, was to recognise the enduring love for the design of the first films. The true art and effort that went into it all. Andor particularly for me returning to Mon Mothma and the rebels worked really well. Whereas the whatever the shit the new Superman films are just totally biffed it by trying to make everything super tech armour hard edges. What is more terrifying than Terence Stamp in a chiffon pantsuit?

@jamey oh yeah, I thought about learning vulcan but it just seems like soooo much setup and boilerplate. At least in openGL is still somewhat manageable to just set up in a couple dozen lines of code and get something on the screen
@slyka I've been using wgpu, the Rust implementation of the WebGPU API, which afaict closely resembles Vulkan, and… yeah, it's a lot of setup. I did start by copy-pasting from a tutorial. but it started seeming sensible to me surprisingly quickly, and I've been able to build abstractions that make sense to me and fit the needs of my project. and I appreciate that there's a lot of support for telling me exactly what I got wrong, which I've done plenty of times. except I have to be very careful about memory layouts for data shared between shaders and the host, and I wish there were any tools for checking that for me

Is it more important that publications post on the Fediverse, or that they don't post on X?
I keep finding myself wondering… now that it’s becoming clear that most people are going to be priced out of regular electronic device upgrades for years, and the ones that do exist are likely to be much more RAM-constrained then before, are apps/websites going to have to be much more well-optimized than they have been for the past decade or so?
