@glyph I agree about Altman's mendacity. But I also think that this company has such a track record of cavalier approaches to safety that I have no trouble believing that a capable offensive model with no guardrails did indeed make these moves. Especially if part of the lie is how "isolated" the environment actually was.

The home appliance giant LG Electronics USA said this week it plans to suspend any apps built for its smart TVs that turn one’s television into an always-on residential proxy node. @inquiline when a class at the end of last term (it was a diverse class in a fraught cultural studies field) discussed the whole thing, the ways the students spoke about the impending exposure would break your heart. I’m certainly going to do my best to identify the limits of what I am allowed to do and then do that. But the admin says the push for this thing came from the student union, so I’m not so hopeful.

@nev LXDE, I would have listed that one if I'd remembered it. I thought of listing Cinnamon too but isn't that GNOME basically? (I don't keep up with these things well)
Cinnamon was forked from GNOME about 15 years ago and is very different these days. It is kinda similar to Xfce in look & feel but back when I started using Cinnamon it had fewer visible issues than Xfce and worked really well with multiple monitors. The DE also (in Linux Mint form) comes with a bunch of homegrown and/or forked apps due to GNOME's "we only develop for ourselves" approach which routinely causes their apps to break for downstream adopters.
