Sometimes I read a post where people don’t understand why a thing is the way it is and I do understand, but I am not sure if I really want to inflict that understanding on unsuspecting people.
Classic r/Netherlands post and replies:
Can you take napkins from the AH To Go without paying for anything?
@nazokiyoubinbou @never_released My doc told me hes quitting because insurance started using ai to diagnose. And they challenge his diagnosis if the ai recommended treatment is cheaper.
@jfmezei there are still some here and there around Vancouver. I wonder what they are doing?
@timbray Microwave towers still used here and there to serve remove locations. Some islands may not yet have fibre. Also, cell towers often rely on microwave trunk relays though this is going away because microwave links don't provide the capacity people expect for internet access.
One thing I keep coming back to when comparing #ActivityPub and AT Protocol: ActivityPub is basically a convention on top of the #web stuff we already have. An actor is a JSON-LD document you GET. An inbox is an endpoint you POST to. If you already run a website, you can bolt this on without changing the site's basic shape. Ghost didn't set out to join the #fediverse, and then years later it could, just by adding an endpoint.
AT Protocol feels less like that to me. Running a PDS means a signed repo, a Merkle search tree, a firehose, a DID. It's not a layer you add to an existing site. It's closer to standing up another backend beside it.
I think that's why ActivityPub keeps making sense to me. You can join later. You don't have to have built the whole thing with federation in mind from day one.

@David AUSSI au Japon !

There's an interesting piece of work to be done (probably somebody's already had a stab at it it) on the 'histiography' of economics.
Adam Smith and other early political economists (not to mention Marx) warned about capitalism's inherent drive to monopoly - so how on earth did all that 'hidden hand' stuff - so clearly based on imagining national and international 'markets' as if they are indeed like street markets - get applied to multinational corporations larger than countries, and their multi-million-pound lobbying (and worse) operations ?
As to many of the technology multinationals (and much of the rest of the media) - their consumers are not their customers. 'Consumer choice' is not a useful idea when there is no clear price of consumption. The customers of most technology and most media companies are not us - they're other companies that buy advertising.
I beg to differ on the last point on two counts: 1. Microsoft and Apple; and 2 the other corps would not buy the advertising if the 'consumers' weren't consistently using their products (Alphabet, Meta, Amazon - although there is the issue of cloud services but that too is being foisted on ordinary consumers). They all leverage out any alternative to retain consumers.
computers were invented in the *mumblties* and you had to pay to program them
then in the late 70s, you could finally program them! for free! you just had to own a microcomputer! yay
but then in the 80s and 90s you had to buy compilers, which were expensive
by with the 2000s, rapidly compilers and interpreters became free again. anyone could program, for free!
and then in the 2020s someone invented "programming but you have to pay", again.
DON'T FALL FOR THIS TRAP

#Emploi | À temps plein, le revenu d’activité médian des femmes est inférieur à celui des hommes quelle que soit la population observée. Cette différence est plus marquée au sommet de l'échelle socioprofessionnelle.

The dementia is accelerating!
When copyright and reality clash. Again.
> Copyright in the European Union and geo-blocking: a work that is in the public domain can be published online free of charge in a Member State even if it remains protected in another Member State.
> The website on which the work is made available must incorporate an 'effective’ technological measure to prevent its being accessed by internet users visiting the website from a Member State in which that work is protected.
