Do you like bumping your music a little loud? Cops are searching Flock Safety ALPR data to investigate noise complaints. The creeping use cases keep getting more absurd. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/05/more-license-plate-reader-mission-creep-school-residency-verification-background
@eff after having to call the cops on whoever was blasting music on the corner so loud that it was 90 decibels inside my apartment twice a week for months, I wish you had picked a different example to highlight. Permanent ear damage and being unable to work on Mondays because it’s impossible to sleep at 90dB is not some minor problem that should be treated so dismissively.
The Costco theory of the internet:
People are tired of infinite choice.
They want fewer decisions, higher floors, lower bullshit, clearer standards, and someone competent enough to throw the garbage out before they arrive...

@Daojoan Good read, interesting perspective on the decision weariness of consumers, and lack of plentiful decision as an unnamed luxury. Thank you.
Two years ago I explained my BDFL guiding principles:

I just watched an interview with @andrewrk, who had an interesting first thought on being a BDFL, right about here (58:40 +) :

European Commission linked leather to deforestation, then ignored it

> The clock is ticking in Brussels. By June 1, the European Commission, the bloc’s executive body, is set to receive feedback on its proposal to remove leather, hides and skins from the EU’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Officials, however, are trying to push this amendment even after the commission’s own research confirmed that cattle hides also drive forest loss, a Mongabay analysis shows.
Set an alarm for 2 minutes and focus mindfully on your breathing, nonjudgmentally bringing yourself back from any distractions.
The film All Quiet on the Western Front follows the only fully deaf battalion that served during World War I.
@pho4cexa Thanks! But the goal is to be _better_ than big providers though, and not just cheaper, so we're going for zero-downtime here.
I just migrated our first machine from DRBD-backed storage and into Ceph without even dropping a ping packet, and that's the plan for the rest of the machines.
Everyone was migrated away from castor without noticing too ☺️ (although exactly one machine caught a stray because of its running config not matching its stored config on disk, regrettably).
It's been so dark these past couple of afternoons here on the south coast! Can't believe we still have a few weeks until the shortest day. Already the days feel super short (to me).
We've got some showers rolling in tonight and then rain for the next few days. I feel like I should be hibernating or at least doing a lot more cosy snuggling in bed but apparently there's like... work? And errands and social gatherings that require me leaving the house? Seems counterintuitive
@teadrinker As a Melburnian I feel you! The days are super short and the last few of them have been nothing but grey, gloomy, damp… Not terribly cold, but the lack of sunshine is still hard for me to handle
Was würde so ein Abgleich ändern?
@Roodie In meinem letzten Beispiel die Einsicht, dass die eigene Wahrnehmung eben nicht den belegbaren Zahlen entspricht
I always humoured the idea of Cascadia becoming its own thing.

Is anyone else sweating their ass off today? 🥵

@the_etrain These aren't binary choices. We can have both. For example, we could reallocate everything spent on the Iran War, and I'm pretty sure that would be enough to make affordable housing available. Or, we could simply implement widespread rent control, which wouldn't cost much at all to implement.
@the_etrain @Steve +1 to this.
