@antijingoist which one are you?
USA being a #worldcup cohost country wasn't the smartest idea to begin with. But we're weeks away and that orangetan keeps scaring tourists, from all countries.
Now even the national teams are debating whether to hold base on US soil and just fly from Canada/México when required.

@mattblaze Nice one. Really captured something there. What a glassy calm day. Looking for my boat, I had one in SD at the time, but don't think it's in the shot :)

Chatbots, for when you want to use the command line but only want it to do what you say half of the time.
@thomasfuchs and you want to write out "Please list all files in the current directory, with ownership and permissions" instead of "ls -l".
There's an interesting pattern here that I thought was worth describing.
1) Someone posted a video of a band playing a song critical of generative models
2) I saw it, liked it, decided to Boost it, then wondered if maybe it was burped up by a Trained #MOLE.
3) So I did a web search and found an article about the band by the local public broadcaster
4) This gave me confidence to promote the post, and the band, so I shared a link to the article;

(1/?)
There are 2 institutions that allowed me to do this; the public broadcaster itself, and the web search tool that allowed me to find it, and to find a relevant article on their website. Without knowing that either existed before I started my search.
In the late 1990s I got involved with independent media with an assumption that only the second of those really mattered. That public broadcasters were creatures of the state, no better than corporate media at reporting the truth. I was wrong.

I've heard this argument from my primary school teacher banning calcs.
You don't need to know how to slap planks together if you can pour concrete.
Old wisdoms are relegated to quaint footnotes
New wisdoms are discovered.
@n_dimension I believe you are confusing -- or consciously conflating -- understanding with ability.
By crude example, one can readily understand θ=cos−1(A/H), without having the ability to calculate it in one's head.
Canadian teens have made a version of Monopoly in a pentagonal shape and called it “American Dictator.” It retails for CD $50 with a proportion of the profits going to a local food bank. One of the spaces is called Supreme Justice. If you land on that you can buy the Justice and over-rule any other player’s move. Game cards are called “Questionable Decisions,” each one being an actual Trump decision. Unfortunately all stock has been sold out.

The Costco theory of the internet:
People are tired of infinite choice.
They want fewer decisions, higher floors, lower bullshit, clearer standards, and someone competent enough to throw the garbage out before they arrive...

Latest outrageous use of the DoJ as the president's personal harassment weapon: E. Jean Carroll is being criminally investigated for perjury after her (successful) civil case against Trump.
The perjury theory seems to be quite weak; the she corrected the statement in question before trial, and the judge in the case had ruled it wasn't relevant to her credibility. But even if she beats the rap, she's in for a ride. Hopefully another no bill with the grand jury.
@thomholwerda Localsend, to quickly squirt a file/clipboard/url to another computer. Or phone.
@rotopenguin @thomholwerda please no more file squirts
@neoluddite I would agree. Even reading experienced coders unable to refactor their own vibe-coded monstrosity, talk of losing control of it. There's the work-as-output of these automations, but the decision tree itself is black-boxed. You can ask an engineer why they did what they did and when, to understand the terrible situation your infrastructure is in. You cannot trust a chatbot to do the same.
@JulianOliver it happens even without LLMs in the mix. Management put pressure on devs to meet impossible deadlines or some other dodgy thing, the good devs leave (Dead Sea Effect, qv), and all of your in-depth knowledge from the people who built the system is gone. Fast forward four or five years, and unless you've rebuilt that somehow, you're doomed to just fiddling around the edges.
